Presenting at Hydrogen Tech World 2024 in Essen

June 15, 2024

Hydrogen Tech World 2024 took place in Essen, Germany, and was co-located with the Green Steel Tech World conference. The event brought together a wide range of industry leaders, researchers, and innovators from across the green hydrogen ecosystem, showcasing cutting-edge projects and solutions driving the hydrogen economy forward.

I attended to present our study Green Ammonia – Key technical challenges to profitable production, based on detailed modeling of ammonia production systems powered by intermittent renewable energy sources. The study focused on the technical and economic implications of operating ammonia synthesis plants off-grid, without relying on a stable external power supply.

The key conclusions were:

  • Large-scale energy storage is essential to ensure continuous ammonia production from intermittent sources.
  • Seasonal adaptation strategies — adjusting production rates and energy storage use over the year — can make storage sizes more feasible and cost-effective for off-grid operations.

This work builds on my broader experience in renewable energy system modeling and aims to provide practical insights for developers and policymakers working to scale green ammonia production.

The conference served as an important platform to connect with technology providers, plant developers, and other experts working across the hydrogen and green steel value chains, reinforcing the critical role of integrated planning and flexible operations in the transition to a net-zero energy system.
